Product Overview

A blind emboss is the one decoration that leaves the card exactly the colour it started: no ink, no foil, no varnish – just the shape of the artwork pressed into the board from a raised die. On a white card like the tag shown here, that means the rose is only visible as a change of surface. Head-on it reads almost flat; tilt the tag and the embossed line work catches the light and the whole flower appears. Run a thumb across it and you feel every petal. This is the finish high-end apparel, bridal, fragrance and jewellery labels come to for a tag that looks quiet in a photograph and expensive in the hand, and it is the reason the die-cut outline here is a scalloped rose rather than a rectangle: the silhouette does the work that colour normally does. The same die-cut and emboss combination runs on gift tags, earring and jewelry cards, thank-you cards, box inserts and small die-cut coasters, so one finish can carry a whole collection.

Key Features

✅ Blind Emboss – No Ink, No Foil

The die is cut in relief and pressed into the card under heat and pressure, so the image is raised out of the sheet rather than printed onto it. Nothing is added to the surface, which is why the card stays a single clean white front and back and why the effect never looks dated, never cracks at a fold and never has a registration edge to misalign. Depth is set on the die: a light kiss emboss for a subtle mark, or a deeper sculpted emboss where the artwork has several levels and you want the rose to stand out in real relief. On uncoated white stock the embossed lines also pick up a faint shadow of their own, which is what makes the pattern readable from a normal viewing distance.

✅ Die-Cut to Any Outline

The tag is cut to a drawn outline, not to a standard rectangle – here a scalloped rose with a punched hole in the top petal. We build the cutting die from your vector path, so the same order can be a flower, a leaf, an arch, a shield, a monogram or a simplified version of your own logo. A shaped cut costs little more than a rectangular one once the die is made, and the die is kept for reorders. Corners, lobes and thin stems have a practical minimum radius, and any narrow neck in the outline needs a bridge so the piece does not tear in the press – both are checked at artwork stage before the die is cut.

✅ White Card Stock, Front and Back

The sample is a bright white uncoated board with a fine tooth, which is the best surface for blind embossing because the paper fibre takes and holds the impression. We can run the same design on a thicker cotton or duplexed board for a stiffer, more substantial tag, on a soft-touch laminated card for a cooler hand feel, or on a tinted stock – ivory, sand, sage, blush – where the emboss reads deeper because the shadow has more to work against. Board weight is quoted against your format: a small earring card needs stiffer stock than a large gift tag, or it will curl once the hole is punched.

✅ Punched Hole, Slot or Threading

A punched round hole, a rounded slot, or pierced post holes for earrings are cut in the same pass as the outline, so the hole always sits true to the shape. The tag shown uses a single round hole sized for cotton cord, and we can supply it strung to your spec – cotton cord, satin or grosgrain ribbon, elastic loop, waxed thread, a safety pin or a plastic barb – or shipped loose for your own line. Hole position moves with the artwork; on shaped tags we normally keep it in the widest part of the outline so the card hangs straight.

✅ One Die, a Whole Family of Pieces

The same outline and the same emboss can run across a set: shaped hang tags with a punched hole, small earring cards with pierced post holes, folded jewelry cards with a chain slit, gift and thank-you tags, and round or shaped coasters. Running them together keeps the die cost on one invoice and guarantees the emboss depth and the outline match across the range – which matters when the tag, the earring card and the gift card are seen side by side on a counter.

✅ Fully Customizable

Size, outline, board tone and weight, emboss depth, embossed area, hole position and threading are all made to order. Blind emboss also combines well with other finishes on the same card: a foil or letterpress hit on the front with a blind emboss on the reverse, a debossed panel for care text, or edge painting in a contrasting colour. Send artwork and we will quote the shaped die, the emboss die and the stock separately so you can see what each adds.

Our Advantage

Factory-direct production with low minimum order quantities supported, so a small label or a single bridal collection can order a shaped, blind embossed tag without paying for an industrial run. Quotes come back within 24 hours with the cutting die, the emboss die and the stock priced separately, so a second shape or a second format can be costed before you commit. Artwork is checked by our team before either die is cut, and on a blind emboss that check matters more than usual: because there is no colour to hold the eye, the design has to work as pure relief – lines that are too fine disappear, gaps that are too tight fill in, and a shape with a narrow neck will not survive the press. A pre-production sample is confirmed with you before mass production, since emboss depth cannot be judged from a PDF. The dies are kept for your reorders so the next collection gets an identical impression, and fast delivery is available for launch and showroom dates.

Notes for Artwork

Please supply vector files (AI / EPS / PDF) with all fonts converted to outlines, the die-cut path on its own layer, and the emboss area on a second layer with the raised and recessed levels marked. Minimum line width for a clean emboss is roughly 0.4 mm at final size, and type below about 7 pt will lose its counters – below 6 pt the emboss simply reads as a smudge. Keep gaps between embossed lines at 0.8 mm or more so the board has somewhere to go; two lines closer than that merge into one ridge. A multi-level emboss needs each level separated by at least 1 mm, and very deep embosses on thin stock will show through on the reverse, so tell us if the back of the card will be visible. Keep all live elements at least 3 mm inside the die-cut outline, and 6 mm clear of the punched hole – shaped outlines with tight inside curves are the most common cause of a torn edge. The scalloped rose here is drawn with generous lobes for exactly that reason: small, sharp petals cut cleanly in paper but tear when the outline is also being embossed. If you only have a low-resolution JPG or PNG, our team will review it and tell you what needs redrawing before the die is made.
